Jimmy Carter enjoys Collision
I just rediscovered this photo of Jimmy Carter sitting on one of my art furniture pieces. He visited the studios at RIT while I was a student studying furniture design. This one of a kind furniture design is called “Collision” and constructed of heavy intersecting planes of Maple to create a 30″ high stool with a foot rest. The design looks intentionally unstable, although it is not. I recall that he looked sceptically at the piece, got onto it just enough for the photo, and after a pause said, “hmmmm, sturdy!” That was all. I suppose that being sturdy is one of those attributes I would like to incorporate in every piece, my hope is that it is not the most obvious one.
