Rachael Van Dyke and Cameron Van Dyke have been commissioned to do one of four large artworks for the new Helen Devos Childerens Hospital opening in January 2011. The enclosed water feature is 16′ tall and will consist of three large acrylic panels with water entering at the top and passing through a series of colorful whimsical obstacles. Each panel depicts children interacting with water in one of three memorable ways – playing in the rain, bath time, and learning to swim. A requirement of the hospital is that children participate in the making of the artwork. Three high school art classes will be selected to work with Cameron and Rachael to create and test the obstacles. Below is a model of the water feature.

Cameron spent a week with the art students developing the concept and visual language for the sculpture. The pieces of the sculpture were fabricated in Cameron’s studio and then assembled at the site. The students were invited to view the progress daily and watch the installation process.

“The sculpture Sheltered Flight embodies in abstract form an issue that almost every 13-14 year old deals with; The tension that is created between the sheltering of parents/teachers and the students desire to start making their own choices. The title additionally refers to an enclosed area where birds learn to fly before being set out in the wild – hopefully a metaphor for the Junior High experience.”

Last year we did a set of lounge chairs for a customer considering a typical Morris chair, but who wanted something much lighter weight and that had a mid century/arts and crafts influence to them. A framework was designed that is recognizable to both styles and Butternut wood was chosen for its light weight and semi open grain that connects the typical mahogany or white oak used in chairs in those time periods. The resulting chair is very comfortable and lightweight. We were recently asked to do another set of four. Below are some progress photos. Completed project can be found here.

I just rediscovered this photo of Jimmy Carter sitting on one of my art furniture pieces. He visited the studios at RIT while I was a student studying furniture design. This one of a kind furniture design is called “Collision” and constructed of heavy intersecting planes of Maple to create a 30″ high stool with a foot rest. The design looks intentionally unstable, although it is not. I recall that he looked sceptically at the piece, got onto it just enough for the photo, and after a pause said, “hmmmm, sturdy!” That was all. I suppose that being sturdy is one of those attributes I would like to incorporate in every piece, my hope is that it is not the most obvious one.

This sculpture was designed with the input of the art students of Jenison Junior High School. Installation of the sculpture was completed just days before summer break, completing a two month experience for the students of being involved with the concept and design of a large permanent public sculpture and receiving daily progress photos. The installation was completed in a day while students visited during their art class period. The sculpture now serves as an interactive meeting location with functional elements integrated into the three large foot elements. Each different “foot” provides outdoor seating by creating various heights and angles for perching. The completed sculpture can be found here.
